Regulatory Update 📢 Australia and ACMA's SMS Sender ID Register - May 2026

Scheduled for May 18, 06:30 PDT  -  Oct 15, 06:30 PDT

Scheduled

In line with Australia’s mandatory sender registration requirements, Telesign is actively progressing through approved participation pathways with Australian telecommunications partners.

With the regulatory deadline of 1 July 2026 approaching, SMS messages sent using unregistered alphanumeric sender IDs may be labeled as “Unverified.” While this designation does not impact message delivery, it may affect how messages are presented to recipients.

Please refer to Telesign’s guidance below for scenario-based registration requirements. For any questions or assistance, contact your Customer Success Manager or reach out to enablement@telesign.com.

Do note that there may be applicable fees associated with registration of Sender-IDs.

Registration pre-steps

To register an alphanumeric Sender ID for Australia, be ready to complete the following:
Complete the following required registration details by downloading the following:

Additional guidance:

#Sender ID Guidelines
List the exact Sender ID strings you use for messages to Australian numbers. A Sender ID must meet certain format and policy rules to be accepted. Common requirements include:
● 2–11 characters, non case-sensitive, letters/numbers allowed; cannot be only numbers.
● Must not start/end with a space or underscore
● Must not be offensive/misleading; and must not be made up solely of restricted “scam-like” terms.
● ACMA maintains a list of restricted terms (e.g., “alert”, “bank”, “verify”, “security”, “urgent”) that cannot be registered alone unless combined with identifying brand characters (example: “ACMA Alert” may be allowed, “Alert” alone is not).

#Business identity details
● If you have an ABN (Australian Business Number):
Prove your ABN is active and your entity information aligns with official records (e.g., ABR/ASIC extracts).
An Authorized Representative who can complete identity/authorization checks (may require being recognized in official records).
● If you do NOT have an ABN (international entity):
Official business registry extract from your country/state of incorporation (or equivalent).
An Authorized Representative plus authorization of documentation (LOA may be required depending on the evidence provided).

#Proof of “valid use case” (tie Sender ID to your brand)
Your Sender ID must clearly match your brand/entity name (or a reasonable abbreviation/acronym) supported by evidence (e.g., business name, trademark, or domain)

Registration Scenarios

● Direct-Brand Ownership
1/ Scenario A — Direct Brand owner with ABN (most straightforward)
You will be able to register Sender IDs with standard business verification steps.
ACMA will manage and trigger the business verification via email: (Sender Australian Communications and Media Authority.
2/ Scenario B — Direct Brand owner without ABN (international entity)
Registration can require enhanced third-party verification and is generally handled via certified participation paths.

● Scenario C — Non-direct / reseller traffic (most constrained)
1/ Based on current partner constraints under discussion, this scenario may not be eligible for alphanumeric registration, and if so, your sender may change to “Unverified” after 1 July 2026.
Please note that we are still actively engaged in supplying a solution to register reseller brand traffic. We will keep our Status page updated as much as possible
2/ Immediate alternative: We recommend registering your traffic through a numeric sender option (dedicated long-code number). Provisioning Time: 1-2 weeks.

Registration Process Flows & Recommendations

#Scenario A — Direct Brand owner with ABN
● Provide the required information as listed in the “Registration Pre-steps" section directly to your assigned Customer Success Manager or send an email directly to enablement@telesign.com
● Telesign will submit information on your behalf to ACMA
● ACMA business email verification triggered (no-reply@digital.acma.gov.au)
● Brand authorized representative completes verification and all requested steps by ACMA. Representative will then have access to the ACMA portal with confirmation status – Traffic can then be considered registered and valid. Telesign will receive registered status from ACMA directly to map registration completion

#Scenario B — Direct Brand owner without ABN
● Provide the required information as listed in the “Registration Pre-steps" section directly to your assigned Customer Success Manager or send an email directly to enablement@telesign.com
● Telesign will submit information on your behalf to ACMA
● 3rd party verification triggered by email (TBD)
● Telesign will provide you, via your submitted ticket, required information such as the Telco and verification service provider name, which will be a required step during the verification process
● Brand authorized representative completes verification and all requested steps – Traffic can then be considered registered and valid. Telesign will receive registered status from ACMA directly to confirm registration completion

#Scenario C — Non-direct / reseller traffic
Please note that we are still actively engaged in supplying a solution to register reseller brand traffic. We will keep our Status page updated as much as possible
● For immediate resolution to avoid being marked as “Unverified”, we recommend registering your traffic under a dedicated numerical sender (long code). You can share the required details as listed below with your Customer Success Manager or by sending an email to enablement@telesign.com. As best practice, each legal entity should have its own dedicated long code (DLC). Sharing a DLC across entities is not recommended, as it may be viewed as non-compliant with ACMA guidelines.
● Needed information: Company Name, Company URL, Message Content Sample; Provisioning Time: 1-2 week.
